Degree Show

Between May 29th - June 2nd was the Graphic Design New Media degree show held at the Truman Brewery in East London.

I exhibited my 'London at Night' project which received positive feedback on the simple interface design.

Summer Work Experience

This summer I obtained four weeks work experience from two different design companies. The first was at Contra and the second was at Intercommunic8. Both of the companies were based in London and they both offered different work.


Contra

This creative company has six global officies with a large clientele including Nokia. My two weeks work experience involved re-branding the Contra idendity and working on short animations for new mobile operator Blyk. Here's a look at what I did for Blyk at the time I was there:





Intercommunic8

This is a full internal communications agency based in Farringdon. Clients range from Coca-Cola, Mazda and William Hill. At the time I was there I worked on the Farmers Weekly Awards 2007. This involved putting together award slides for the awards night:

First touch of the iPhone in the UK

Today I got my hands on the iPhone for the first time in the UK. A colleague had brought one back from the US and then unlocked it, which meant the only useable functions were the iPod and the wireless internet.


The first thing I did was compared it to my black 30gb iPod video. The iPhone was slighly heavier. The feel of the devices were quite similar, well built, smooth and glossy. I touched my way into the photo library which had some poor photos in so I couldnt appreciate the screen there, but I did hold the iPhone in the landscape format and then I used my fingers to zoom in and out of the photo which is really fun.

The iPod functionality looked really nice, but as the iPhone only had 8gb of storage it meant there wasnt much to look at, although there was a full length movie on there and when that came up in fullscreen it was so sharp and big! I dont know how I can watch a movie on my video iPod anymore after seeing the playback quality of the iPhone!


The biggest floor in my opinion is the keyboard. It was soo difficult to use, it took me a few minutes to type 'Design Without Sleep'. I do understand though that that sort of thing would require practice and other smart phones look tricky too.


I also tried to log on to the internet but unfortunately there was no wireless internet at the time.


The camera on it is really poor to be honest. Apple should have left that out and used a small iSight camera (like the ones used in iMacs and MacBooks) on the front which could be used with iChat.

You have to remember though that this device is version 1. Do you remember version 1 of the iPod?! My verdict is I doubt i'll be buying one, at least not straight away. Why? Because I am a Pay & Go customer with hardly any strings attached. When this phone is released in the UK it will probably have an 18 month contract, £40 a month, plus £200+ for the device. What I will be buying 100% though is the next generation of the video iPod. It is due out mid to late September 2007 at the Paris Expo in time for the Christmas holidays. I cannot wait to touch my iPod in a whole new way.

Adove Live & Neville Brody keynote

I went to Adobe Live! yesterday (June 6th) at the Business Design Centre in London and I really enjoyed it.

At 10:30 Neville Brody started his hour long talk in the main auditorium. The room was so full Adobe staff had to open another conference room next door to the main room and set up a live video feed, crazy!

It was a great talk anyway. Neville showed us his work, talked about the 'London College of Identity Crisis', his political views, his love for Freehand (cringe worthy stuff with Adobe officials looking a bit pee'd) and his hate for the new Olympic Logo. He said it looks like Lisa Simpson giving Bart a blow job!



After that I went to the Computer Arts stand and obtained the June issue and picked up some CA stickers and postcards.

Then I nipped over to the Epson & HP stands to get some of my designs printed to A3.

Accelerando

I created this just now as I noticed my laptop on the side temporarily closed while I had left the room. When I came back it was sat in the pitch black room, with just the back light shining. On the screen at the time was some large magenta type which left a lovely hue. Once photographed I played with it and this is the final piece:

The image now has sixty-eight outer points and one-thousand & twenty four lines.
