Work Update

As mentioned in my previous post I am now part of the digital team at Nitro and the work we've been doing ranges from a brand new website design for The Royal Bank of Scotland, Nike Tuned 10 product launch for Footlocker Europe, new page designs for Mars.com and online advertising for Tesco Personal Finance, Footlocker and The Central Office of Information.

Here's a sample of the online advertising I have worked on recently:

London at Night

Recently I have been going to London on a monthly basis during the night developing my photography skills. I soon noticed I had a growing collection of photos in my archive so I decided to create a dedicated website for them called London at Night. Rather than a typical gallery with a previous and next button I thought I would try and do something a little more original. Inspired by geotagging I created a simplified map of London and placed a dot in the location of each photo. The end result is numerous scattered dots over a map of London.

When a user clicks on a dot it reveals a relevant photo, and clicking the photo closes it. Pretty simple really. See what you think by clicking here. If you have any suggestions or criticisms please leave a comment as I would be happy to hear them.

The site will also be updated regularly, so check back now and then for new photographs.

Thanks,

Shaun.

Peter James

Peter James is one of south London's leading independent agents for buying, selling, letting or renting, land, new homes and financial services.

Recently they asked me to create a document which visually promotes the areas in which they operate.

I went on various photo shoots to get imagery for each area.

At the moment it is awaiting final approval before going to press, so this is a sneak peak really. If you have any criticisms please leave a comment as there is still time to make changes.

Matthew Carter

Tonight I saw Matthew Carter, 'the most important typographer of our time', talk at the Royal Society if Arts in London. It was great to see and hear such a master of typography in a very nice venue.

I've set the font in this post to Verdana as he designed it. Do you think it works nicely on screen?

Free London WiFi

Having just purchased an iPod touch I decided to find out where there's free WiFi in the area I frequent the most London. It's a simple JPG so it can be saved and put onto any wireless device easily.

Mook (live post)

Starting today for the next four weeks I will be doing four weeks work experience at Mook.

This post will be updated for the duration of my work experience so that my university tutors can see that im not watching Cash in the Attic and Loose Women all day on TV.

Monday 22nd October 2007

09:16
Arrived at the Mook studios a bit early.

09:30
Met Darren at reception who then showed me my desk space for the next four weeks. I have an iMac and today I also have my own PowerBook. Im hooked up to the WiFi so Web 2.0 is never far away.

09:44
Darren has walked me around the studio and introduced me to the various people that have managed to stumble in after another heavy weekend of booze and probably deadlines. I cant remember anyones names yet, except for one guy called Shane, the introduction was like, "Shane, Shaun, Shaun Shane", lol.

10:34
Got offered tea from a tea pot! I had to decline as im a coffee guy :-s

13:35
A group of us went to Boulevard Deli on the other side of Covent Garden which is a lovely medditerean sandwich shop. Unfortunately my wallet decided to stay in my bag back at Mook!

14:09
Drinking Red Bull

16:01
I now know where the toilets are.

16:17
Ive now got a job which is to source imagery and lay out some rough scenes for an alcohol awareness job.

18:03
That's day one completed! Im off to get the 18:18 train from Charing Cross.

Tuesday 23rd October

09:18

Finished the meeting. Approximately 60% of the company was there, from the MD, to myself, the intern. It was a meeting which occurs each month where everyone reviews projects, accounts etc. It was well worth being in as I saw a visual structure of the company which helps to understand Mook.

13:16
Going for lunch!

15:35
Given a job to do. The Mars website has some cards, each card has a fact. There's tonnes of cards and tonnes of facts. I had to open the fact documents which the copywriters have created and copy and paste the information into the relevant card which exists as a movie clip inside of various flash files.

15:37
A photography company are showing off there work in the board room and have free tea and cakes from Pauls!

15:55
Finish laying out the copy into the flash documents.

17:42
Been given a task which is to look for an image on two CD's. Sort of like looking for a needle in a bowl of hay.

17:44
Found it. I just previewed the jpgs into a contact sheet in finder, no problem!

18:58
Time to depart the studio.

Tiësto video

This is a compilation of videos I took when seeing the dance DJ, Tiësto, on Friday 20th April 2007. He performed at Alexandra Palace in London to promote the new Elements of Life album. There were singers on stage, fireworks, ice blasters, drugs, fire and a screen 100ft across. The visuals were stunning & well timed.
